If I’m struggling with writer’s block, it often helps me to brainstorm writing prompts (or find images that inspire me), and then try to write to them. So here are some (thirteen!) spooky and horror themed ones as it’s that time of year.
Hope they provide some Halloweenspiration!
A door that only opens at every full moon.
You come across this scene in the woods – what happens next?
Find a ghost or dark folklore story from your local area and write it from the perspective of the ghost or monster.
A tree that survives by stealing memories from passers-by.
While walking in an empty landscape, you hear a breath next to you.
A monster with a shadow that grows with every person it meets.
A boarded up window into a room that doesn’t have a door.
“It began with a howl.”
Write from the point of view of an object in a haunted house.
What if you had a potion that allowed you to see the worst fears of people around you?
Write something based on the image below.
A loch suddenly full of unexplained algae and weeds.
A house that grows every time someone inside it cries.
